Miniature Schnauzer Rescue of Houston

About MSRH

Miniature Schnauzer Rescue of Houston, Inc. (MSRH) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization sponsored entirely by donations.  We are dedicated to the never-ending, sometimes overwhelming, task of saving the lives of abused, abandoned and/or unwanted Miniature Schnauzers who have lost their homes.  Many of our dogs come to us healthy.  Others are sick or injured.  They may come to us from shelters, the streets, from puppy mills or from owners who cannot, or will not, care for them any longer. In almost all cases, at least in their recent past, they have not been loved nor have they felt the security of a loving home.  Our goal is to ensure these fine animals get healthy, never again face life in a dangerous situation and, instead, live in a safe, loving and secure “forever” home!  Until that time, our dogs live in a loving, foster home.  MSRH does not operate a shelter.

I’m Karen Gayeski Coleman, Founder and President of MSRH.  The first Schnauzer rescue was for myself.  Gretchen joined my family in October 1998 and, though I had other pets in the past, it didn’t take long to realize that the Miniature Schnauzer was the breed for me.  Unfortunately, just over a year later, Gretchen was ‘welcoming’ the kids home from school when she escaped after someone opened the gate.  During the long search, I contacted shelters, boarding facilities, vets and groomers.  I never found her….and it broke my heart.  But within the tragedy, and through all my contacts, I found my purpose.  On February 1, 2000, Miniature Schnauzer Rescue of Houston was born.

In the beginning, MSRH operated using funds I had received from an inheritance.  In that first year alone, we rescued 75 dogs.  Even with this success, the number of rescues continued to grow and MSRH now relies on adoption fees as well as donations from people who love the breed and generously support our continued efforts.  Countless donations, in amounts both big and small, helped us rescue more than 165 dogs in 2007 and provide veterinary services to these dogs totaling nearly $70,000!  Since its inception, we’ve rescued well over 1,000 Miniature Schnauzers and helped orchestrate their “New Beginnings”.

Our adoption fees generally range between $300 and $400 though there are certainly exceptions.  These fees help cover veterinary services including spay/neuter, shots, heartworm tests (and treatment if positive) and dental work as required.  MSRH has also coordinated a number of specialty surgeries including portal shunts, a gallbladder removal and orthopedics.  In short, those adopting dogs from MSRH can be assured the dog is healthy and thoroughly vetted.

Through the years, I’ve been blessed to work with both individuals and companies whose dedication is immeasurable.  Today, Sherry Eitel (Vice-President) and Marilyn Melaney (Secretary / Treasurer), along with our Board of Directors, help oversee a caring, dedicated team of volunteers that number 30-40 at any given time.  There are so many who helped guide and support MSRH efforts from the beginning.  Friends like Bev Smith, Vicky Baird, Michele Smith, Evelyn Hoover (Lone Star Miniature Schnauzer Rescue, Dallas), Bolivia Powell, Karen Hoffman (Animal Control, Pasadena) and Laurene Murtaugh gave so much to help bring an idea into reality.  In addition, numerous companies have offered their support including Vincent & Elkins (who did our 501 C3 paperwork pro bono), Dr. Tom Dayton of Parker Road Animal Hospital (who provides outstanding veterinary care) and Happy Tails Dog Spa (who fosters two minis for us plus will groom any of our rescues at no-charge).  I can’t individually list all the current volunteers, as well as other individuals and companies that have supported, and continue to support, our efforts but please know that you are forever appreciated and that I am eternally grateful.  Thank You!

I’ve attached just one of our many Schnauzer Success Stories below.  It is stories like this one, and the countless other perfect matches, that keep us motivated at MSRH.  Placing loving Schnauzers in loving Forever Homes is what we’re about.  Won’t you join us?  Whether as a volunteer or with a monetary donation, you can help support our never-ending journey to place loveable dogs with loving families.  Please click the sections on the left side of our site to learn how you can adopt a dog, volunteer at MSRH or donate to our worthy cause.  Thank you in advance for your consideration and support!

Schnauzer Success Stories

Placing a Miniature Schnauzer in a loving, forever home is rewarding for both MSRH and for the forever family.  As we carefully screen each adopter family, it’s no surprise that they provide a loving and safe home for their new best friend.  Our rescued Schnauzers seem so appreciative of the love, attention and security of their forever family and home.  But sometimes, the Schnauzer’s love for the family exceeds all expectations.  Such was the case when Connor went to be with 2-year old Hailey and her mom.  Hailey had been having a hard time.  She missed her Dad.  Nothing seemed the same.  Mom knew she had to do something and she contacted MSRH.  Maybe it was divine intervention.  Connor hadn’t been with MSRH for all that long.  He was from the streets and he was sweet as could be.  He was perfect!  From the moment Connor arrived at his forever home, everything changed for the better.  Hailey bonded with him immediately and lovingly man-handles him all the day long!   Connor has been squeezed, tugged, hugged and kissed.  When the day is done, he can be found in Hailey’s bed keeping watch and resting himself in order to begin another day of loving fun.  Connor seems to relish every minute.  Maybe he recognizes an opportunity to give back to the loving family who gave him a second chance and a terrific forever home!
