Injustice is being an unwanted pet or being born on the streets by a mother who was an unwanted pet. At MSRH, we’re in a crisis and, as we approach the celebration of our independence, we’re looking for Schnauzer Patriots to rally behind our cause. Predictions in December, in our last appeal for donations, are ringing true. The economy is taking its toll and pets – of all types – are getting the short end of the stick. When you review our website, you can see the increase in “found” dogs and see how many more are “lost”, perhaps stolen. Shelters are bursting. MSRH is taking in far more dogs than we’re able to adopt out and this is stretching all of our available resources including our financial and our foster family resources. For the first time in the nearly ten year existence of MSRH, we have had to turn dogs away. And we all know what that means.
Why is this happening? Getting a pet seemed like a good idea at the time. Or maybe the children couldn’t be satisfied any other way. And then reality sets in. Pets require love and attention. And that takes time. Pets need food, supplies and training. And that takes time….and money. And so, what starts as a way to bring companionship to the home, ends with the companion being forced out the door or surrendered to a shelter. For many of these animals, it is an early and unpleasant death – either due to the harshness of the unforgiving street or at the hand of the executor when shelter space or funds run scarce and adopters cannot be found. 2009 is shaping up to be one of the worst yet. The economic downturn has impacted, or will impact, many individuals and families. For some people, particularly in this environment, having a pet will mean little more than having another mouth to feed. It is overwhelmingly sad but it is for this very purpose that we were called – saving unwanted Schnauzers and giving them a second chance by placing them in stable, loving homes. And we need your help!
Last year MSRH, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, rescued approximately 240 Miniature Schnauzers in the greater Houston area and provided veterinary services to these animals that far exceeded our revenue from adoption fees. We rely on individual and company donations, both large and small, to help us continue in our quest to rescue, nurse and find homes for this incredible breed of dog. Are you a Miniature Schnauzer Patriot? The economy has been hard on all of us. But, unfortunately, the need for your help continues to grow coincident with the increased number of rescues. Perhaps you’ve adopted one of our Schnauzers in the past and would like to make a gift to reflect the joy that they have brought to your home. Perhaps you’d like to make a donation as a gift for that person who is impossible to buy for. Or perhaps you’d like to make a donation in memory of a loved one or in memory of a beloved pet that has crossed the “Rainbow Bridge”. I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter
The cast-offs of human society.
I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal.
I was angry.
“God” I said, “This is TERRIBLE! Why don’t you do something?”
God was silent for a moment and then spoke softly,
“I have done something,” was his reply.
