“……’cause I just want you here tonight, holding on to me so tight!” Every pet wants to be loved. Every pet wants their special place. But, if you are an unwanted pet who’s been abandoned or you’ve been born on the streets by a mother who was an unwanted pet, you could be waiting a while. In today’s trying times, we at MSRH brace ourselves for the inevitable. Getting a pet seemed like a good idea at the time. Or maybe the children couldn’t be satisfied any other way. And then reality sets in. Pets require love and attention. And that takes time. Pets need food, supplies and training. And that takes money. And so, what starts as a way to bring companionship to the home, ends with the companion being forced out the door or surrendered to a shelter. For many of these animals, it is an early and unpleasant death – either due to the harshness of the unforgiving street or the hand of the executor when shelter space or funds run scarce and adopters cannot be found. And this year could be one of the worst yet. The economic downturn has impacted many individuals and families. For some people, particularly during the holiday season, having a pet will mean little more than having another mouth to feed. We, and other rescue groups, have to prepare ourselves for an increase in discarded pets. It is overwhelmingly sad but it is for this very purpose that we were called – saving unwanted Schnauzers and giving them a second chance by placing them in stable, loving homes. We need your help!
In 2009, MSRH, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, rescued more than 220 Miniature Schnauzers in the greater Houston area and provided veterinary services to these animals that totaled more than $110,000. 2010 has brought even larger numbers. The task is overwhelming at times, but the MSRH family has continued to grow over our 10-year existence and we continue to expand the area that we serve and now rescue Schnauzers not only in Houston but in North, South and Central Texas as well as portions of Louisiana! Unlike a shelter, MSRH receives no taxpayer assistance. The adoption fee we charge has to remain competitive with fees sought by breeders, pet shops and puppy mills. Many of our rescues have health issues that must be overcome before being adopted. Heartworm treatment alone can cost over $350! So adoption fees cover only a portion of our total expenses. We rely on the generosity of our friends to help us continue in our quest to rescue, nurture and find homes for this incredible breed of dog.
The economy has been hard on all of us. But, unfortunately, the need for your help continues to grow coincident with the increased number of rescues. I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter
The cast-offs of human society.
I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal.
I was angry.
“God” I said, “This is TERRIBLE! Why don’t you do something?”
God was silent for a moment and then spoke softly,
“I have done something,” was his reply.
“I created you.”
We find beauty in the most incomprehensible places,
In the otherwise homely faces.
It is our gift to see beyond the dirt, terror, sadness & defeat and find the true soul that lies within.
